Selena Gomez is a chart-topping pop star, an A-list actress, and one of the world's most successful celebrity beauty moguls. But despite her glamorous credentials, the 33-year-old couldn't be more down to earth when it comes to her diet.
According to her husband Benny Blanco, Gomez 'has the diet of a five year old child.' Discussing his wife's unhealthy eating habits during a taping of Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop Podcast in West Hollywood on Tuesday, Blanco said that Gomez will eat 'whatever is bad for your diet'. He cited 'burgers and fries' as two of her favorites, before revealing that she's also fond of fast food for breakfast.
'This morning I walked in and she was eating Jack in the Box at 6:45 in the morning,' he said. Horrified by Gomez's diet, Paltrow gasped, 'This is NOT Goop approved!' Jack in the Box is a popular American fast food chain known for its mixed menu of burgers, tacos, and curly fries, and also for being open 24/7. According to Tasting Table, it was recently ranked as the worst burger chain in America.
Blanco than said that 'the one healthy thing' that he can get Gomez to eat is Goop Kitchen, which is Paltrow's 'healthy' takeout chain that sells everything from soups and salads to pizzas and pasta. 'She will eat the s**t out of Goop,' Blanco said, before adding that Goop makes his 'favorite' pizza. However, he then admitted that Gomez 'doesn't really like fruits or vegetables', so when she orders Goop's Chinese chicken salad, she picks out 'everything on top of the salad' and then leaves all the lettuce and greens for Blanco to finish himself.
Despite having her own cooking series on Netflix, Gomez is somewhat infamous for being a bad cook and eating poorly. In 2011, she was hospitalized for malnourishment because of her junk food diet. 'I do eat. The problem is I don't eat right,' she said at the time. 'I love M&M's, Kit Kats, Snickers and Goobers at the movies.' She's cited Jack in the Box as her favorite food chain and even shared her order during an interview with Gordon Ramsay. 'I get two tacos, two egg rolls, curly fries, and a chicken sandwich,' she proudly declared.
In 2016, Gomez told Bon Appetit that she kept her tour bus stocked with 'Hot Cheetos, chocolate, and pickles'. 'I love a good plate of fried chicken,' she added. Despite her calorie-dense diet, Gomez has generally been able to maintain her enviable figure. While her weight has fluctuated at times, much of that has been related to her battle with the autoimmune disease lupus, which can cause inflammation in the body. The star was at her heaviest in early 2023, but has since slimmed down after focusing more on her health in recent years.
Gomez has a home gym and a personal trainer, and is a fan of quick HIIT workouts and barre classes. In an interview last year, Gomez said that she was frustrated by the scrutiny around her weight. 'Everyone just has something to say and it's really making me sad and — not even sad 'cause, I'm not a victim — I just think it's made me a tad bitter and I feel really guilty for saying that but it's true,' she said on the Jay Shetty podcast.
Gomez launched her own cooking series, Selena + Chef, on HBO Max in 2020. While she admittedly isn't a whiz in the kitchen, the series followed Gomez as she tried out new cuisines and recipes in her home kitchen with a professional chef. It ran for four seasons and spawned the Food Network spin-off, Selena + Restaurant. Blanco is also a foodie, with the music producer releasing his own bestselling cookbook in 2024 called Open Wide: A Cookbook for Friends.
