An 18-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a collision between an electric motorcycle and a car in Jarrow early Monday morning. Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service, were dispatched to Ellison Street shortly after 5:30am on 22 June.
Collision Details and Emergency Response
Northumbria Police reported that the electric motorcycle collided with a vehicle at the junction of Ellison Street and Grange Road West. The rider, aged 18, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital by road ambulance, accompanied by the Great North Air Ambulance critical care team. The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they sent one ambulance crew, a rapid response paramedic, and a clinical team leader, supported by the air ambulance service.
Road Closures and Investigation
A police cordon was established around Ellison Street and Grange Road West, with officers conducting investigations and gathering evidence. The road was closed in both directions between Western Road and the A185 but has since fully reopened. Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing, according to a Northumbria Police spokesperson.
Statements from Emergency Services
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on Ellison Street in Jarrow at 5:39am on Monday 22 June. We dispatched one ambulance crew, one rapid response paramedic, one clinical team leader and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to hospital by road for further treatment.”
A spokesperson for Great North Air Ambulance Service added: “Our critical care team was activated at 5.40am to reports of a road traffic collision in Jarrow. We had a paramedic and doctor in a rapid response vehicle and they arrived on scene at 5.55am. Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient, and accompanied them to hospital.”
Northumbria Police reiterated that the road closure was brief, solely for vehicle recovery, and that investigations are ongoing.
