Van driver arrested after A1 road rage crash near Durham

Durham Constabulary has arrested a van driver following a suspected road rage incident that caused a car to crash into a tree on the A1 near Durham. The collision occurred just after 7:30 AM on Sunday, June 22, 2026, on the northbound slip road at Junction 62 (Carrville).

Details of the Incident

According to police, a white Ford Transit van and a Hyundai Tucson were involved in a road rage altercation before the van collided with the car, forcing it off the road and into a tree. Emergency services attended the scene, and the driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation pending further inquiries.

Fortunately, no one is believed to have sustained serious injuries in the crash. The slip road was closed for a short period to allow for investigation and recovery of the vehicles.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Durham Constabulary is appealing for witnesses, particularly drivers who were traveling northbound on the A1 between 7:15 AM and 7:30 AM on Sunday. A police spokesperson said: "The two vehicles appear to have been involved in a road rage incident with each other before the van has collided with the car which has then hit a tree. Thankfully no one is believed to have been seriously injured but officers want to speak to any potential witnesses who were driving Northbound between 7.15am and 7.30am."
