A 14-year-old British girl remains in critical condition after being swept out to sea while on a school trip in Lloret de Mar, Spain. The incident occurred on Saturday morning, just hours before she was due to return to the UK.
The teenager, part of a group of schoolchildren from London, was enjoying a final swim when a wave carried her approximately 500 feet from the shore. Police officers on the scene attempted to warn the group about the dangerous conditions but arrived to find two people already in difficulty.
Officers jumped into the water and reached the unconscious girl, with firefighters assisting by throwing a rope. She was brought to shore and given CPR for around half an hour before being taken to Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona, where she remains in intensive care.
Local authorities have opened proceedings for possible negligent injury, but reports suggest the incident is being treated as an accident, with no responsibility attributed to the group's tutors. Witnesses praised the rapid response of emergency services, crediting them with saving the girl's life.
