Freddie Flintoff's New ITV Show Explores Tourette Syndrome After Top Gear Crash
Freddie Flintoff's New ITV Show on Tourette Syndrome

Former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff is set to host a new two-part ITV series, Freddie Flintoff: Understanding Tourette’s, exploring the realities of living with Tourette syndrome. The show, described as “highly emotive,” comes after Flintoff’s own traumatic experience following a serious accident while filming Top Gear in 2022.

A Personal Connection

Flintoff, who suffered broken ribs and facial injuries when the car he was driving flipped over at the Top Gear test track in Surrey, revealed that the isolation he felt after the accident resonates with the experiences of young people with Tourette’s. “The thought of kids isolating themselves and facing such strong stigma both breaks my heart and resonates deeply with me,” he said. “After my accident, I wouldn’t leave my own house, and that’s a feeling I would never want anyone, let alone a kid, to go through.”

Inspired by a BAFTA-Winning Film

The series draws inspiration from the BAFTA-winning documentary I Swear, which brought attention to the condition. Flintoff noted that recent events, such as the involuntary outburst by John Davidson at the BAFTA Film Awards, highlighted ongoing stigma. “The events at the BAFTA Film Awards and the online discourse that followed only emphasised how much stigma is still out there,” he explained. “Whilst the film made positive strides, these secondary responses seemed to set those advances right back.”

Challenging Misconceptions

Traveling across the UK, Flintoff will meet individuals with Tourette syndrome, showcasing a range of experiences from visible tics to less obvious symptoms. The goal is to challenge “the misconceptions and stigma” surrounding the condition. Emma McNally, CEO of Tourettes Action, praised the initiative: “Too often, portrayals of Tourette’s have focused on shock factor or humour, which can reinforce misunderstanding. This series has the potential to help all members of the community feel seen and validated.”

ITV’s Commitment

Katie Rawcliffe, ITV’s director of entertainment, reality, and daytime commissioning, said: “We are incredibly proud to be working with Freddie Flintoff and Tourettes Action to bring this compelling programme to viewers.” Freddie Flintoff: Understanding Tourette’s will air on ITV, aiming to foster understanding and drive change for those affected by the condition.
