A Place in the Sun Star in Tears Over Family Tragedy
A Place in the Sun Star Weeps Over Family Tragedy

A presenter from the popular television program A Place in the Sun was moved to tears after hearing about a devastating family loss. In a repeat episode broadcast on Wednesday, June 10, a couple from Wales sought the assistance of host Jean Johansson to find a vacation property in Costa del Sol.

A Heartfelt Search for a Holiday Home

Darren, a former Mr. Wales and bodybuilding champion, along with his wife Joanne, were searching for a home in Spain for their three children and extended family. Their quest was deeply personal, driven by the tragic loss of Joanne's brother, Matt, a decade earlier. In one of their last conversations, Matt encouraged them to seize life and 'live the dream.'

Joanne emotionally shared with Jean: 'My brother sadly passed away ten years ago, and one of our last conversations was that I had to make sure we have as much fun as possible and live the dream with our children. Because he loved the beach and being abroad so much, we thought this would be the perfect way to honor his memory.'

An Emotional Journey

With a budget of £205,000, the couple viewed several properties. After their initial offer of £170,000 was rejected, they successfully negotiated a second offer of £178,000 for an apartment. Overcome with emotion, Joanne broke down in tears, dedicating the purchase to her brother: 'This is for you, Matt!'

She added, 'We can now live the dream in my brother's memory. The family can come here and think about him. My mum and dad feel so close to Matt when we are at the beach, and they can come here anytime they want now!'

Jean, also visibly moved, responded: 'I am so happy; I've never been happier for a couple.'

Living the Dream

Raising a toast, Joanne said: 'To Matthew and the family, and to living the dream!' Jean later reflected to the camera: 'That was an emotional end to an exciting search. Darren and Joanne have the dream property for them and the whole family, and I know they are going to have loads of amazing holidays here in Malaga.'

After the episode originally aired in May 2024, Joanne told A Place in the Sun that they were 'definitely living the dream.' She explained that walking through the door is emotional because the home is so strongly linked to Matt, who tragically died of cancer at age 27. 'We've taken all the children and showed them the places we visited on the TV show, such as Lake Vinuela. It already feels like home, and I'd say we are definitely living the dream,' she said.
