Divock Origi has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31, bringing an end to a career defined by unforgettable moments with Liverpool. The Belgian forward scored some of the most crucial goals in the club's recent history, including a memorable double in the 2019 Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona, where Liverpool overturned a 3-0 deficit to win 4-0 on the night. He also found the net in the final against Tottenham Hotspur, helping secure the club's sixth European Cup.
A Cult Hero at Anfield
Origi's impact at Liverpool extended beyond the Champions League. He netted a dramatic last-minute winner in a Merseyside derby at Anfield, sparking a pitch invasion by manager Jurgen Klopp, who sprinted to embrace goalkeeper Alisson Becker. In total, Origi scored six goals against Everton, earning him cult status among the Liverpool faithful. Across 175 appearances for the club, he scored 41 times, despite starting only 68 matches.
Career Journey
Origi began his professional career at Lille before moving to Liverpool in 2014. He won the Premier League with the Reds in 2020, then joined AC Milan on a free transfer in 2022. After a season-long loan at Nottingham Forest in 2024, he terminated his contract with Milan in December 2024. Origi also earned 32 caps for Belgium, scoring three goals.
In a social media post, Origi said: 'My purpose in the game as a player is fulfilled. I lived out my childhood dreams to play on the biggest stages and win the biggest trophies. I am grateful to God for all of it. To my fans across the world who helped me shine: every iconic moment, every goal, every piece of history we made together will forever be ours. The mission is complete. Now I step into my next calling.'
Origi's retirement marks the end of a career that, while not always in the spotlight, delivered moments of pure magic that will be remembered by Liverpool supporters for generations.
