Hugh Laurie has delivered a masterclass in handling criticism after a journalist dared to call the iconic medical drama House formulaic. The actor, who played the brilliant but cantankerous Dr. Gregory House for eight seasons, responded with wit and intelligence that has since gone viral.
The Critique That Sparked a Firestorm
Freelance journalist Janet Murray took to X to share her thoughts after watching the first season of House for the first time. She claimed the show followed the same narrative every episode, outlining: 'Patient has mysterious illness. Hugh Laurie (House) gets diagnosis wrong. Patient nearly dies. Hugh Laurie gets diagnosis wrong again. Gets threatened with being fired. Patient nearly dies again. Hugh Laurie has last minute leftfield idea. Gets diagnosis right. Doesn't get fired. Eight seasons of this?'
Her tweet quickly gained traction, amassing 1.3 million views. Among those who saw it was Laurie himself, who responded with a pointed yet humorous rebuttal.
Laurie's Witty Comeback
'Thanks for your critique, Janet,' the 66-year-old actor began. 'We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only 6 minutes long. NBC weren't happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn't happy.'
Laurie continued by drawing parallels to other art forms: 'One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what??'
He concluded that perhaps the show simply wasn't meant for Murray: 'The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn't meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!'
Public Reaction
Laurie's response has been viewed 4.1 million times and liked 72,000 times. Fans praised his defense of the show, with one user commenting, 'Doctor House is in the house yall.' Another noted, 'This is an extremely good post by Hugh Laurie. Formulaic television like House can actually be a very good arena for creativity, because it presents the challenge of seeing how many interesting variations on the formula you can come up with.'
However, some critics labeled Laurie 'thin-skinned,' to which he simply replied 'OK.' Murray herself responded lightheartedly, saying, 'Well this was unexpected. And not the slightest bit patronising.'
The Legacy of House
Though House ended 14 years ago, its legacy endures. The show remains available on streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. Laurie's response proves that even after all these years, he remains passionate about the character and the series that made him a household name.
