Belfast hero breaks silence in first live TV interview

Maitiu Mág Tighearnán, the man hailed as a hero for intervening in a suspected knife attack in North Belfast, has given his first live television interview on Good Morning Britain. The incident occurred on Monday night, June 8, in the Kinnaird Avenue area, where the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, was allegedly being attacked by Hadi Alodid, 30.

Details of the Attack

Alodid appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, charged with attempted murder, threats to kill an NHS radiographer, and possession of a knife. Maitiu and a friend were driving to a petrol station when they stumbled upon the horrifying scene. Initially thinking it was a fight, they quickly realized the severity of the situation. Using his son's hurling stick, Maitiu managed to subdue the suspect.

Maitiu's Account

Speaking on Thursday's show, Maitiu described his instinct to act: "I think it's sort of where we grew up in Belfast. A lot of people have that mentality. Some may record it, but there's a man lying there, bleeding. So the first thing is that man needs help." He emphasized the community spirit in Belfast, saying, "It's about helping each other. Communities are coming together to support one another."

Fundraiser and Support

A fundraiser was set up to honor Maitiu's bravery, but he admitted feeling overwhelmed by the attention. "I'm someone who tries to keep a low profile. I don't like too much attention on myself," he said. Maitiu also expressed a desire to visit the victim, having spoken briefly with a family member. Along with the fundraiser organizer, he announced a new fundraising effort for Mr. Ogilvie, pledging £10,000 to start it off.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV X.
