Bill Cody, the iconic country music broadcaster and the voice of the Grand Ole Opry, has died at the age of 67. His passing was confirmed by WSM Radio, where he had been a beloved presence for over three decades.
WSM Radio Announces Bill Cody's Death
In an official statement released on social media, WSM Radio expressed their grief: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and beloved WSM voice, Bill Cody." The statement highlighted his three-decade career, noting that he "welcomed listeners each morning on Coffee, Country & Cody with a broad smile, a conversational ease, and an unerring ability to make both artists and audiences feel at home."
Cody joined WSM in 1994, with Charlie Daniels as his first in-studio guest. He built more than a morning show; he created a gathering place rooted in his deep love for country music and the people behind it. His contributions to broadcasting were recognized with his induction into the Country Radio Hall of Fame, a star on the Music City Walk of Fame, and a forthcoming posthumous induction into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame.
"More than his accolades, Bill will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and genuine gift for connection," the statement continued. "He was a trusted voice, a generous friend, and a constant companion to generations of listeners."
Health Struggles Before Death
In May, Cody's daughter Hannah revealed that her father had been admitted to the ICU for heart and kidney failure. She explained that he would require a heart and kidney transplant and had been placed on an ECMO machine, a life-support system that temporarily functions in place of the heart.
Tributes Pour In from Country Music Stars
Following the announcement of Cody's passing, tributes have poured in from across the country music world. Dierks Bentley wrote: "Country Music has lost one of its pillars. Bill was just as important to the fabric of our music and city as any artist, songwriter or musician. No one loved Country Music, its history and its characters more than Bill Cody."
Emily Ann Roberts echoed this sentiment, saying: "The impact Bill Cody made on country music and its artists is too great to be measured... it will never be the same without him. I'm so thankful I had the honour to know him."
Garth Brooks added: "There might be someone somewhere in the world who loved country music as much, but nobody loved country music more than Bill Cody."
Bill Cody's legacy as a beloved voice of country music will live on through the countless listeners and artists he touched throughout his remarkable career.
