BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has spoken candidly about the emotional toll of her divorce, describing it as "always sad" when relationships break down. This personal reflection comes alongside her significant announcement that she is leaving the BBC after more than 25 years of service.
A Career Spanning Decades Comes to an End
Carol Kirkwood confirmed her departure from the BBC today, marking the end of an era for one of British television's most familiar faces. In a heartfelt statement, she acknowledged that leaving "hasn't been an easy decision to make" but feels "like the right moment to step away."
She expressed deep gratitude to colleagues and viewers alike, stating: "It's been an absolute privilege to bring you the weather every day. My job is something I've never taken for granted and I've loved every minute."
Reflecting on Past Relationships and Personal Struggles
In a previous interview with Woman's Way magazine, Kirkwood opened up about her divorce from property developer Jimmy Kirkwood, whom she separated from in 2008 after 18 years of marriage. "I feel sad when relationships break down," she revealed. "I was married before and we got divorced, and it's always sad when that happens."
The presenter, who married police officer Steve Randall in 2023, offered perspective on romantic relationships, suggesting: "There isn't such a thing—I don't think—as a perfect romance, where you're never going to fall out or have cross words. Of course you are; that's life."
Maintaining Professionalism Through Personal Pain
Kirkwood has previously explained how she managed to maintain her cheerful on-screen persona during the difficult period of her divorce. Speaking to Yours magazine, she described compartmentalising her grief, keeping personal anguish "separate" from her professional life to avoid ending up in a "puddle of tears."
Her career became a crucial coping mechanism, allowing her to channel energy into her work while navigating personal challenges behind the scenes.
New Beginnings and Current Happiness
Despite reflecting on past heartbreak, Kirkwood has been full of praise for her current husband Steve Randall, describing him as "very romantic and very generous" and a "lovely man" in comments to PA Media.
The weather presenter, who is also a published author and has appeared on popular programmes including Strictly Come Dancing and The One Show, leaves behind a substantial legacy at the BBC. Her final message to viewers emphasised the joy she found in being "part of your mornings" and promised to carry forward "the most wonderful memories" from her broadcasting career.
