Springwatch's Chris Packham sighed after Michaela Strachan 'ruined' his segment during the latest episode of the BBC nature programme. The beloved presenting duo appeared together on Tuesday (June 9), broadcasting live from the National Trust Crom estate in Ireland, according to the Express.
A humorous moment on Springwatch
Towards the end of the show, the pair turned their attention to limpets, the aquatic snails renowned for their grip on coastal rocks. To illustrate his point, Chris brought out a replica limpet as a visual aid.
"Over the last 500 million years, on at least 54 occasions, those gastropods have evolved into having this conical type shell," the presenter told viewers, describing the process as convergent evolution.
Michaela then elaborated on how limpets have developed to flourish in their natural environment, an intertidal zone, explaining: "They need to cope with extreme, changing conditions, so when waves come in, they get buffeted, and that cone shape distributes energy of waves in a very efficient way."
Common misconception challenged
Challenging a long-held belief that limpets cling to rocks by suction, Chris revealed it was a common misconception. "It's two types of bioadhesive, essentially glue," he stated.
The wildlife presenter then used the replica to demonstrate precisely how limpets fasten themselves to rocks. As his explanation unfolded, Michaela began pushing the replica along the table to further illustrate his point. She then accidentally pulled off the makeshift radula (part of the limpet), prompting Chris to bury his face in his palm.
"You just pulled the radula off. Honestly," the presenter sighed.
Michaela's playful antics
Moments later, Michaela grabbed the limpet replica and placed it on her head. "I think it's time for me to get into my little scar, to put my head on and enjoy a mindful moment with the sights and sounds of the forest," she joked.
Chris buried his face in his hand again, remarking, "You've ruined it." When the camera returned to the hosts, Chris revealed, "Michaela's had her limpet confiscated. Thank goodness for that!"
Upcoming episodes
Chris and Michaela are due to appear in another two episodes this week before the present series concludes on Thursday (June 11). Springwatch airs on the BBC.
