Good Morning Britain host Ed Balls left Labour minister Jacqui Smith red-faced during a heated debate on Monday morning, as viewers slammed the interview for its irony. The 59-year-old broadcaster, alongside co-host Susanna Reid, grilled the Baroness over Keir Starmer's plans to ban under-16s from social media and crack down on cyberflashing by tech firms.
Starmer's Social Media Crackdown
The Prime Minister is set to follow Australia's lead by imposing a social media ban for children, requiring technology companies to introduce software that prevents children from taking, storing, or sharing intimate images. The first phase of the crackdown could see tech executives face jail time if they fail to comply.
To discuss the plans, the presenting duo welcomed Baroness Jacqui Smith onto the programme. However, the interview quickly turned tense as Ed repeatedly interrupted her to press for answers.
Jacqui Smith Fires Back
Frustrated by the interruptions, Smith fumed: "When Grok, owned by the richest man in the world [Elon Musk], was doing this, it was the Prime Minister who stood up to him and to that type of activity. I think the Prime Minister will have more to say to challenge technology companies to make sure that they are keeping our children safe through Ofcom and the Online Safety Act."
Viewers React to Irony
After the fiery exchange, viewers rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to voice their opinions. Many highlighted the irony of Smith discussing indecent images following her husband's pornography controversy in 2009. The politician resigned after it emerged that her husband, Richard Timney, had claimed £10 on her MP expenses for two adult films on their digital TV account.
- One user wrote: "Ed YOU did interrupt her like YOU both interrupt YOUR guests daily!!!!"
- Another commented: "Let's ask an expert for online porn... Jacqueline Smith, whose husband tried to claim his online porn addiction on her public expenses."
- A third remarked: "The irony of getting THIS politician to talk about banning everyone from seeing anything, even vaguely sexual."
- A fourth observed: "GMB Jacqui Smith's husband watched porn on TV and charged us."
The debate continues as Starmer prepares to announce the full details of the social media ban, which aims to protect children from online harm.
