Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine was abandoned on Sunday after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the second half. The match, held in Odense, was stopped with the score at 2-1.
Incident and Medical Update
The Danish Football Association confirmed that the player involved was former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen. In a statement, the FA assured fans that he was conscious and in stable condition. "Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances. The match has been called off," the statement read.
Previous Cardiac Arrest
Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening match of Euro 2020 against Finland. He was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) but was unable to continue playing in Serie A due to league regulations. He made a successful return to football with Brentford in the Premier League before moving to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga last season.
Eriksen's Reflection
Speaking about his recovery, Eriksen expressed pride in returning to the sport. "I think I've proven that I'm the footballer, not the guy who just had a heart attack. I'm the footballer, and that's something I'm really proud of," he said. "To prove a point that people out there who have a tough time can turn things around. Even in the darkest times, there will be something positive with time."
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen previously stated that the cause of Eriksen's 2021 cardiac arrest remained unexplained.
