Hilary Duff has faced a wave of online backlash after her husband Matthew Koma's response to her admission of relationship insecurities went viral. The 38-year-old singer opened up in a Rolling Stone interview about her fear that Koma might leave her for someone 'cooler,' prompting a controversial reply from the producer.
Duff confessed, 'I always think Matt's going to leave me for some coolio indie songwriter that he works with.' Koma responded, 'Which is so insane. But also very real. Those are real things to get hung up on emotionally.' The exchange quickly spread on X, formerly Twitter, where many fans criticised Koma for not being more reassuring.
One user wrote, 'Why is that a real thing for your wife to be insecure about, Matthew?' Another commented, 'If my man said this publicly I would cheat on him.' Some questioned the health of their relationship, with one fan stating, 'This does not sound like a healthy relationship.'
However, others defended Koma, suggesting he was validating Duff's feelings without endorsing the fear. One supporter said, 'He was trying to not dismiss her even though he thinks it is ridiculous.' Another added, 'I think he was just saying he understands why she has insecurities.'
Duff and Koma met in 2015 while working on her album Breathe In. Breathe Out. They became engaged in 2019 and married in December of that year in a private Los Angeles ceremony. The couple share three daughters, while Duff also has a son from her previous marriage to Mike Comrie.
