Hugh Laurie Roasts Viewer Who Criticized House's Repetitive Episodes
Hugh Laurie Roasts Viewer Over House Criticism

Hugh Laurie, the actor and comedian best known for playing Dr. Gregory House in the hit medical drama House, has fired back at a viewer who criticized the show for its repetitive plot structure. The 66-year-old star, who portrayed the brilliant but misanthropic doctor from 2004 to 2012, responded with characteristic dry wit on social media platform X.

Viewer's Critique Goes Viral

Viewer Janet Murray posted a scathing critique of the show, writing: "Late to the party, but I've started watching Season 1 of House, same narrative every episode." She outlined what she saw as the formula: "Patient has mysterious illness. Hugh Laurie (House) gets diagnosis wrong. Patient nearly dies. Hugh Laurie gets diagnosis wrong again. Gets threatened with being fired. Patient nearly dies again. Hugh Laurie has last minute leftfield idea. Gets diagnosis right. Doesn't get fired." Murray concluded with: "Eight seasons of this?"

The post quickly amassed over 1.4 million views, catching the attention of Laurie himself.

Laurie's Witty Retort

Laurie replied: "Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only six minutes long. NBC weren't happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn't happy."

He went on to draw comparisons to other art forms, noting that Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure, Frida Kahlo painted 50 self-portraits, and Henry Moore explored similar themes. "The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn't meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!"

Public Reaction

The exchange sparked widespread amusement, with one user commenting: "Oh crikey, Janet! I'd take this one on the chin, mate. I cannot be more objective, I'm afraid, as I'm rather envious that you got roasted by Hugh Laurie himself." Murray later conceded: "Apparently it is a badge of honour."

Another user questioned the need for the response, given the show ended 14 years ago. Laurie replied: "I put no more effort into my message than you have into yours. It just happens to be closer to my heart."
