Katherine Ryan, 42, has spoken candidly about the challenges of balancing a high-profile career with raising four children, admitting that while she achieves 'attachment parenting', she has 'no friends' and 'no sleep'. The comedian, who gave birth to her fourth child Holland seven months ago, has since written a book, recorded a podcast and appeared on television just 10 days after giving birth.
Ryan, who has children Violet (16), Fred (almost five), Fenna (three) and baby Holland, said she responds to her children's needs immediately, breastfeeds for as long as possible and co-sleeps with them. However, she described the reality of 'survival mode' parenting as 'bananas', despite having help from her partner Bobby Kootstra and a babysitter.
The comedian also addressed the difficulty of parenting a teenager and a baby simultaneously, noting that while her older daughter Violet is helpful, she is also 'incredibly annoyed' by her younger siblings. Ryan said she finds herself 'stretched in all areas' but believes the age gap will ultimately be a good thing.
On her recent facelift, which cost £16,000 and was performed eight weeks after Holland's birth, Ryan said she did it for herself, not to make a statement about ageing. She explained that after six pregnancies in five years, she no longer recognised herself in the mirror due to weight gain in her neck, and was curious about the procedures used by Hollywood actresses.
