BBC Radio 1 presenter Mollie King has opened up about her sudden two-week absence from the airwaves, following a frightening incident where she collapsed at home. The 39-year-old former Saturdays star, who co-hosts an afternoon show with Matt Edmondson and presents Future Pop on Wednesdays, reassured concerned fans via Instagram after they noticed her absence.
What happened to Mollie King?
In a candid post, Mollie explained that after returning home late from work, she suddenly collapsed unconscious on her bathroom floor at 4am. 'I hit my head and face as I fell. It was a huge shock and I ended up being rushed to A&E,' she wrote. The singer and presenter, who is engaged to England cricketer Stuart Broad and has two young daughters, expressed gratitude that her fiancé was there to help her regain consciousness.
Hospital treatment and recovery
Mollie praised the 'absolutely incredible' staff at St George's Hospital, who stitched her up after the fall. She humorously noted that she needed to buy new pyjamas after being admitted wearing a Looney Tunes top. While she did not disclose the cause of the collapse, she described the incident as a 'wake-up call' to prioritise her health and strength for her family.
On Monday morning, Mollie shared that the previous day was her first social outing since the accident, posting a photo of herself holding her daughter while watching Stuart on Sky Sports. 'After what has felt like a very long two weeks, it was amazing to get out and spend time with my girls. We even had the surprise of spotting Daddy on a big screen, which made us all smile,' she said.
Support from fans and colleagues
The comments section of her post was filled with well-wishes from fellow stars including Vick Hope, Rochelle Humes, Melvin Odoom, and Jamie Laing. Co-host Matt Edmondson wrote, 'We've missed you!' Mollie also thanked her followers for their kindness, saying it 'meant so much' and that she 'can't wait' to return to the radio today.
Social media silence
Mollie had been quiet on social media for weeks, with her last post before the incident being a birthday tribute three days prior. In that post, she reflected on the past year and expressed excitement for the future. Her last major work commitment before the collapse was Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland at the end of May, where she interviewed stars like Niall Horan and Ellie Goulding.
Mollie King's career and personal life
After rising to fame with The Saturdays, known for hits like 'Up', 'Ego', and 'What About Us', Mollie transitioned into broadcasting following the group's indefinite hiatus in 2014. She frequently shares glimpses of her home life with Stuart Broad, 39, to whom she got engaged in January 2021. The couple have two daughters: Annabella, born in November 2022, and Liliana, born in January 2025.
Mollie has spoken openly about the emotional impact of her father's death from a brain tumour shortly after Annabella's birth. She has admitted she struggles with the thought of getting married without her father present, telling The Times in March: 'I can't bear to think about my wedding without Dad being there. Elements like walking down the aisle without him, I still struggle with.' Despite this, she confirmed that marriage is a priority and that she hopes to plan a wedding soon.
