Stephen Fry Thanks Public After Suicide Revelation

Stephen Fry has thanked the public for their support after revealing he attempted suicide in 2012. The 55-year-old comedian and actor said the 'outburst of sympathy' following his confession touched him 'very deeply'.

Writing on his website, Fry said his mental health had improved but he still struggled with loneliness. He addressed others feeling isolated: 'I am writing this for any of you out there who are lonely too. I want you to know that you are not alone in your being alone.'

Fry, who has bipolar disorder, disclosed details of his suicide attempt during a podcast with comedian Richard Herring last month. He said he took 'a huge number of pills and a huge amount of vodka' while filming abroad, and a producer found him unconscious.

The actor has long campaigned for mental health awareness with the charity Mind. He noted that while the public response has been overwhelmingly kind, it can be 'flustering and embarrassing' when it becomes the only topic people want to discuss.

Fry is due to appear in Shakespeare's Globe production of Twelfth Night in the US this October, alongside Mark Rylance.
