Fans have been given the first look at the unexpected follow-up to an Oscar-winning movie. The Social Network made a significant impression when it first released back in 2010, dramatising the creation, early days, and rise of Facebook as a company, alongside its founder Mark Zuckerberg. Now, audiences are getting another movie that looks at the tech giant from the same award-winning writer.
What is The Social Reckoning About and When Will It Release?
Rather than a direct sequel, The Social Reckoning is actually being described as a 'companion piece' to The Social Network. Aaron Sorkin returns to write the screenplay, after picking up an Academy Award for his work on the original title. This time, however, he is also in the director's chair. While he is more well known for his writing, such as penning Moneyball, A Few Good Men, and creating the show The West Wing, he previously helmed Being the Ricardos, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Molly's Game.
The Social Reckoning's plot is based on the events that led to the Wall Street Journal's piece called The Facebook Files. The new film is inspired by the true story of Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network's most guarded secrets. According to the trailer, it's been confirmed that fans can expect the film to land in cinemas later this year, on October 9.
Who is in The Social Reckoning Cast?
Jeremy Strong, known for Succession, is leading the cast and is already impressing fans with his performance as Mark Zuckerberg. He will be joined by The Bear star Jeremy Allen White, who will play reporter Jeff Horwitz. Meanwhile, Mikey Madison, from Anora, will star as whistleblower Frances Haugen. They will be joined by a number of recognisable names and faces, although not all of their characters have yet been confirmed.
Comedian Bill Burr will feature in a prominent role, working closely with Zuckerberg. The trailer reveals his character will have a tense showdown with the Facebook founder. Also listed in the cast are Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku, Billy Magnussen who starred in Bond movie No Time To Die, and Betty Gilpin from Glow and Widow's Bay.
The original film holds an impressive 96% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes, and is described by fans as 'powerful', 'phenomenal', and 'endlessly rewatchable'. The Social Reckoning releases in cinemas October 9.
