During last week's State of Play, Summer Game Fest, and Xbox Games Showcase, it became evident that most major game releases are steering clear of the November 2026 launch window to avoid direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar's highly anticipated title is scheduled for November 19, prompting other publishers to shift their releases to September, October, or even 2027.
Barbie Rewind Steps Up
However, one game has dared to challenge the giant. Barbie Rewind, developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Atari, is set for release on November 12, just a week before GTA 6. This collection of 16 retro games, originally released between 1991 and 2007, features titles like Barbie Pet Rescue, Barbie Horse Adventures: Blue Ribbon Race, and the previously unreleased Barbie: Vacation Adventure.
The game allows players to decorate the Barbie DreamHouse with cosmetic items unlocked by completing objectives in the classic games. While it is unlikely to dethrone GTA 6 in sales, Barbie Rewind offers a lighthearted alternative for those seeking something different during the busy gaming season.
A Stacked Gaming Calendar
September 2026 is already packed with major releases, including Marvel's Wolverine, Silent Hill Townfall, and Control Resonant. Meanwhile, an upcoming Nintendo Direct on June 9 may add more titles to the November calendar, though Nintendo has less to fear as GTA 6 is not launching on the Switch 2.
If any game could truly go head-to-head with GTA 6, it might be a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a fan-favorite title. For now, Barbie Rewind stands as the only brave contender in November.
