Speculation is mounting that a Freddie Mercury AI hologram show could be in the works, following the success of the ABBA Voyage residency in East London and a recent meeting between Queen guitarist Sir Brian May and KISS star Paul Stanley.
ABBA Voyage, which opened two years ago, uses de-aged motion-captured performances of the band and generates $2 million a week. Other acts have followed suit, with KISS announcing a similar avatar show after their final live performance, and Elvis Presley's estate planning an AI hologram experience, Elvis Evolution, in London later this year.
In February, a trademark was filed for Freddie Mercury's name in 3D and VR by the company managing his catalogue. Over the weekend, Sir Brian May and Paul Stanley attended ABBA Voyage together, with Stanley posting on Instagram that they “had lots to catch up on.”
Sir Brian has previously commented on the possibility of a Queen hologram show, saying last year: “We’ve talked about and looked at holograms of Freddie. We love to be live and dangerous, that’s it, that’s our emphasis. Now, when we’re all gone, yeah sure, make an ABBA thing about us, but while we’re here I want to play live.”
