Staff at Uno's Trattoria in Newcastle were thrilled to welcome former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston for an unexpected visit at the weekend. The restaurant, located on the Quayside, shared photos of the actor with the team on Facebook, writing: 'Not every day the Doctor drops in for dinner… A huge thank you to Christopher Eccleston for joining us at Uno’s this evening. The team were absolutely thrilled to meet him and snap a quick photo.'
Eccleston's Connection to Newcastle
Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor in the BBC series in 2005, has strong ties to Newcastle. He starred in the gritty drama Our Friends in the North in the early 1990s, which was set in the city. During his recent stay, he also recorded an episode of Desert Island Flicks at the Tyneside Cinema and performed four shows of The Name of That Song at Live Theatre, just minutes from Uno's.
Uno's Wall of Fame
Like many celebrities before him, Eccleston was asked to sign Uno's Wall of Fame, joining names like Newcastle United's Entertainers, who frequented the restaurant in the 1990s and returned for a reunion in early 2025, as well as singer Peter Andre, who visited earlier this year and praised the friendly atmosphere on Instagram.

Uno's has been a staple of Tyneside's food scene for decades, known for its warm welcome, hearty Italian food, and affordable prices. In a previous poll by ChronicleLive, readers voted it one of the best Italians in the North East. The restaurant's Facebook post added: 'Whether you know him as the Ninth Doctor, Nicky Hutchinson from Our Friends in the North, or from his many incredible roles on stage and screen, it was a pleasure to welcome him to Uno’s.
