Beyond Paradise fans are convinced a heartbreaking storyline could be on the horizon for DS Esther Williams. The beloved BBC drama wrapped up with an emotionally charged finale last week, as Humphrey Goodman and Martha bid farewell to Esther's daughter, Zoe.
In the closing episode, the fictional Shipton Abbott community came together for a touching send-off, during which Martha gifted Zoe with a cherished family heirloom in a poignant moment that struck a chord with audiences.
For those who have followed Esther's story from the very beginning, her tendency to keep people at arm's length stems from a profound fear of allowing others close enough to cause her pain. Yet this series, Zoe's choice to go travelling, coupled with her heartache over Archie, has sparked a transformation in Esther that reached its peak in the finale.
Despite tensions already reaching fever pitch, devoted fans believe there could be further turbulence ahead for Esther, having spotted a telling habit of hers. Heading to Reddit to voice their concerns, one eagle-eyed viewer asked: "Has anyone else noticed that when Esther's stressed or upset she often grabs a bottle of beer out the fridge as soon as she gets home?"
They added: "I wonder if this will turn into a storyline around alcoholism in the next series, especially with Zoe being gone. Maybe something like that would be too heavy for a show like this though!" Responding to the comment, another viewer seemed to take issue with the claim, pointing to Death in Paradise, the show from which Beyond Paradise spun off.
Last year, Zahra Ahmadi, who portrays Esther, revealed her family are massive admirers of the feel-good detective drama. Speaking to Hello!, she said: "My whole family watches the show. My mum's side are all from the West Country. So there they watch it, proud West Country people as well. They love it."
