Bolton: The Unexpected 'Hollywood of the North' Film Hub

Bolton, a town in Greater Manchester, has earned the unlikely nickname 'Hollywood of the North' due to its frequent use as a filming location for major television productions. Its Victorian architecture and cobbled streets have attracted crews from Netflix, the BBC, and ITV, with a total of 88 filming days recorded in 2023 alone.

Historically a key centre for cotton spinning during the Industrial Revolution, Bolton was once home to over 200 cotton mills. Today, it is a modern town known for its Victorian buildings and as the home of Bolton Wanderers football club. This architectural heritage has proven a major draw for film crews.

Key locations include Le Mans Crescent and the town hall, which have featured in numerous TV series. Shows partially filmed in Bolton include Happy Valley, The Reckoning, A Gentleman in Moscow, Ridley, and Alma’s Not Normal. Other dramas using the town as a backdrop are It’s a Sin, Nolly, Brassic, The Ipcress File, The Full Monty, and Red Rose.
