Cillian Murphy's 'Intense' Netflix Film Steve Gets Autumn Release Window

Cillian Murphy is set to star in a new Netflix film titled Steve, an adaptation of Max Porter's novella Shy. The project marks the first official production from Murphy and Alan Moloney's new company, Big Things Films. The film is described as 'intense' and 'very funny', with a 'darkly funny' tone.

The story follows a headteacher, played by Murphy, at a last-chance reform college facing closure. The narrative unfolds over 24 hours as Steve struggles with his mental health while trying to save the institution. The original book is told from the perspective of a troubled teenager named Shy, but the film shifts focus to the headteacher's viewpoint.

Murphy expressed his admiration for Porter's writing, stating that the novella 'broke his heart' and that he 'adore[s]' Porter's work. The film is directed by Tim Mielants, who previously worked with Murphy on Small Things Like These. Porter is adapting his own book for the screen.

Filming took place between May and July last year. Alongside Murphy, Jay Lycurgo has been cast as Shy. Netflix has confirmed a release window of autumn this year, though a specific date has not yet been announced. It is unclear if the film will receive a limited cinema or festival run before its streaming debut.
