William Roache, who has played Ken Barlow on Coronation Street since the show's first episode in 1960, has said he has 'no intention of retiring' as he turns 90 years old. The actor, who celebrated his birthday on 25 April, is recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest-serving television star in a continuous role.
In a new ITV documentary titled 'Happy Birthday Bill', Roache discusses his iconic role and his future on the soap. 'People will say when are you retiring? Are you going to take a break? But then what happens?' he said. 'Whilst I can do it, and whilst they will have me, I have no intention of retiring. I am so fortunate to work for an organisation that is happy to have me.'
The documentary also offers glimpses into his private life and his time before Coronation Street. A highlight for Roache was reuniting with Anne Reid, who played his on-screen wife Valerie Tatlock. Reid left the show in 1971, and her character was killed off. In the documentary, she returns to the Rovers Return after 52 years. 'It was a lovely moment, we both just started laughing,' Roache said.
Reid also revealed that she had a crush on Roache during their time on the show. 'She told me that she used to dream about me and I laughed and said don’t you mean nightmares?' Roache recalled. 'And then she told me that she had a crush on me, but she never told me at the time!'
'Happy Birthday Bill' airs on ITV and ITV Hub on 19 April at 8pm.
