EastEnders fans were left in tears on Thursday as Ben Mitchell finally opened up about the devastating reason behind his recent erratic behaviour. The character, played by Max Bowden, has been lashing out, staying out all night, getting drunk, and starting fights, culminating in a brutal beating. But in an emotional confrontation with Lola Pearce, the truth came out.
Ben's downward spiral has been driven by guilt and grief over the death of his boyfriend Paul Coker, who was killed in a homophobic attack three years ago. Ben was also beaten in the same attack and has blamed himself ever since, believing he started the altercation that led to Paul's murder.
In Thursday's episode, Ben snapped at his young daughter Lexi, prompting Lola to demand he talk to her. Breaking down, Ben confessed he has been punishing himself, still struggling with Paul's death. Lola quickly reminded him that the attackers' actions were not his fault, offering a moment of solace.
Viewers took to social media to share their heartbreak, with one tweeting: 'Ben opening up to Lola that scene was so important.' Another wrote: 'Poor Ben!! Paul's death still haunts him, no wonder he's lashing out.' A third added: 'Punishing yourself for what happened to Paul. Oh Ben.'
EastEnders continues Monday at 8pm and Tuesday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
