HBO has continued its legacy of shockingly violent weddings with the latest episode of Euphoria. The third episode of season three, which aired on Sunday, has drawn immediate comparisons to Game of Thrones' iconic Red Wedding due to its gruesome ending.
Brutal Wedding Night
After the trailer teased Jacob Elordi's Nate and Sydney Sweeney's Cassie bloodied and screaming in their wedding attire, the full episode delivered a harrowing climax. Upon returning home from their wedding reception, the newlyweds find Nate's debt collectors waiting. They knock Cassie down and beat Nate to a bloody pulp before chopping off his pinky toe, all while his bride watches and wails in horror.
The brutal scene immediately sparked comparisons on social media to the Red Wedding, the season three episode of Game of Thrones that featured a bloody massacre during a wedding feast, resulting in the deaths of several main characters.
Fan Reactions
One viewer wrote on X: "Haven't seen such a disastrous wedding since The Red Wedding." Another agreed: "I thought the red wedding was peak chaotic wedding... then Nate and Cassie said 'hold my toxic champagne.'" A third added: "I think Nate & Cassie may have had the most depressing wedding this side of the Red Wedding." Another fan commented: "Cassie and Nate's wedding was easily the second most chaotic wedding in television history only after the Red Wedding from GoT."
While the Red Wedding comparisons dominated, some fans had expected a tone similar to Succession's disastrous wedding episodes, one of which ended in vehicular manslaughter and another that featured the death of Logan Roy during his son's wedding. One viewer complained: "I was hoping this episode would have the same potential as Connor's wedding in the last season of Succession, but I forgot this is Euphoria." Another added: "If Sam Levinson thought he can pull off a Succession or GoT type of wedding episode I'm never gonna stop laughing."
Wedding Details
Before the Hans Zimmer-scored episode descended into chaos, Cassie and Nate's wedding featured the closest thing to a high school reunion this season. Zendaya's Rue, Hunter Schafer's Jules, and Alexa Demie's Maddy reunited at the extravagant event, which included $50,000 floral arrangements and a quickly melting ice sculpture of the couple. The episode also featured the late Eric Dane in his role as Nate's father, Cal Jacobs. Dane filmed his scenes after being diagnosed with ALS and died at age 53 in February, before season three premiered.
New episodes of Euphoria season three air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
