Gogglebox stars Giles Wood and Mary Killen have been a staple on our screens since 2015, entertaining Channel 4 viewers with their witty one-liners and eccentric style from their Wiltshire farmhouse. However, their off-screen life is just as intriguing.
The couple met when both were 21—Giles studying at Wimbledon Art School and Mary working as a model. They have been married for over 30 years, living in a cottage in Wiltshire that has fallen into disrepair. In a past interview, they revealed peeling paint, no central heating, and a mouldy kitchen they dubbed 'The Grottage'. Despite this, they have remained there for 28 years while working and filming Gogglebox.
Off-screen, Giles is a reputable artist and contributor to The Oldie, while Mary is a journalist for The Spectator and authored a book in 2012 titled How the Queen Can Make You Happy. They often refer to each other as 'nutty', explaining that it stems from their mutual acknowledgment of being 'a bit neurotic'. Mary once said: 'We call each other nutty because we both consider the other to be a bit mad.'
The couple share two grown daughters who prefer to stay out of the limelight. One daughter was originally set to appear on Gogglebox with Giles but backed out, leading Giles to convince Mary to join instead. Mary has also mentioned that their daughters occasionally 'turn on' Giles for swearing, as the couple try to avoid profanity at home.
Giles and Mary made a cameo on Channel 4's election special programme on Thursday night, continuing their long-running role as beloved telly fans.
