The Liverpool Empire Theatre has announced the return of the multi-award-winning musical Chicago, which will arrive in Liverpool in March 2027 as part of its UK and Ireland tour.
About the Musical
Set in 1920s Chicago, the musical follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who kills her lover after he threatens to leave her. To escape conviction, she hires the city's most successful criminal lawyer, who turns her case into a media sensation while she competes for the spotlight with fellow inmate Velma Kelly.
Featuring music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and choreography in the style of Bob Fosse, Chicago includes iconic songs such as All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, and Razzle Dazzle.
Awards and Legacy
The production has won six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy Award, and is the longest-running American musical in both Broadway and West End history. Since opening on Broadway in 1996, Chicago has been performed in 38 countries, translated into 12 languages, and seen by more than 35 million people worldwide. The production has played more than 36,000 performances and grossed over $1.8 billion.
Tour Details
Chicago last came to the Empire in 2022. Based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, the musical has a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse. The 1996 Broadway revival was directed by Walter Bobbie, choreographed by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse, and produced by Barry and Fran Weissler.
Tickets go on general sale at 10am on Friday, 19 June. The show will run from Wednesday, 24 March to Saturday, 27 March 2027.
Also Coming to Liverpool: Hadestown
This announcement follows news that the Tony and Grammy-winning musical Hadestown will also tour in 2027, with dates confirmed at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool. Blending American songwriting traditions from indie folk to pop, blues, and New Orleans-inspired jazz, Hadestown features music, lyrics, and a book by acclaimed singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. The musical originated as an indie theatre project and album before being transformed by director Rachel Chavkin.
Anaïs Mitchell said: "I'm thrilled that Hadestown will be touring across the UK and Ireland! Our West End casts have taught us that these songs sound right at home in every lilt and brogue… we are thrilled to bring this story and music to folks all over and see what new resonances will be found." Hadestown is the winner of eight Tony Awards on Broadway including Best Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
