Gary Lineker Hits Back at Micah Richards Over ITV ‘Traitor’ Jibe
Lineker Shuts Down Richards Over ITV ‘Traitor’ Jibe

Gary Lineker delivered a pointed response to being called a 'traitor' for appearing on ITV's World Cup coverage, telling Micah Richards to 'shut the f*** up' during their Netflix podcast. The former England striker, who spent over 20 years at the BBC, made a guest appearance for the rival broadcaster ahead of Germany's clash with Ivory Coast on Saturday.

Lineker’s ITV Appearance Sparks Backlash

Lineker took a swipe at his former employers within seconds, declaring ITV's studio was 'absolutely amazing' compared to the BBC's remote setup, a remark following his acrimonious split last year. The former Match of the Day host has been based in New York throughout the tournament, presenting daily episodes of The Rest Is Football for Netflix.

Lineker had originally planned to remain part of the BBC's World Cup coverage after leaving Match of the Day, but in May last year it became apparent he would cut all ties. As ITV's broadcast began, he quipped: 'Thank you for joining us on ITV for this one, another day, another game, another channel.' Host Laura Woods interjected, and Lineker replied: 'Sorry, old habits, Laura, old habits.'

Good-Natured Ribbing on Netflix Show

On his own Netflix programme, Lineker and Richards poked fun at the ITV stint. Richards, mimicking Lineker, introduced the podcast and said: 'Hello and welcome to the Rest Is Football with me Micah Richards.' Lineker cut in: 'Woah, woah, woah, woah. Micah that's my job,' prompting laughter. Richards said: 'It's not nice is it? Absolute traitor you are. 26 years of blood, sweat and tears to the BBC then you go over to the rival.' Lineker responded: 'Hang on a minute Micah. Shut the f*** up (before turning off the TV). I'll do it properly now.'

Lineker Explains Professional Motives

When Richards rejoined, Lineker explained with a wry smile: 'I was making an appearance to promote my show 'The Box' which is also on ITV in September. And also I wanted to go and have a little look at the studio. I also wanted to go and promote our Netflix show which I got two mentions in for. It was just for purely professional reasons Micah.' Richards was unconvinced, saying: 'Professional reasons? Come on Gaz. You're better than that.' Lineker quipped back: 'Says the person that works for pretty much every television channel known to man.'

Behind-the-Scenes Digs at BBC

The duo kept up their ribbing, with Lineker filming a behind-the-scenes blog. He said: 'Whatever you read isn't necessarily true, I'm not a pundit for the whole tournament because I've got a Netflix show everyday.' Several jibes were directed at the BBC, with Lineker asserting he could 'confirm it's real' before enjoying a head massage, which you 'don't get this at the BBC.'
