Tunisia's football federation has deleted a social media post that appeared to confirm the sacking of manager Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 World Cup defeat to Sweden. The U-turn has left the coach's future uncertain.
Confusion Over Lamouchi's Status
The Tunisia Football Federation (FTF) earlier posted on Instagram in Arabic: "An agreement has been officially reached to dismiss coach Sabri Lamouchi. Plans are underway to appoint Mondher Kebaier as the national team coach on an interim basis to complete the World Cup qualifying matches." However, a formal agreement on exit terms was not reached, causing confusion.
Reports indicate Lamouchi led part of a team session at the Rayados Training Centre, though he was not present during the open section. A video showed the squad returning to their hotel without him. Mirror Football has contacted a source within the Tunisia camp for clarity.
Match Details
Tunisia lost 5-1 to Sweden at the Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, Mexico. Former Arsenal defender Omar Rekik scored a consolation goal before half-time. Tunisia face Japan next on Saturday at the same venue, but it is unclear who will manage the team.
Lamouchi said after the defeat: "We need to be more aware. We cannot keep making mistakes that are obvious and easy to avoid. At this level, such errors are unforgivable." He added that Sweden's world-class forwards made recovery impossible.
Potential Replacement
Herve Renard, who led Saudi Arabia to a shock win over Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, has been mentioned as a possible replacement. The situation is overshadowing Tunisia's tournament, and players and fans are eager for a resolution.
