As summer temperatures rise, slugs become more active, threatening garden plants. Gardening experts recommend several natural deterrents that are just as effective as chemical solutions and often found at home.
Copper Tape: A Reliable Barrier
Ryan Kaila at Kingfisher Direct recommends copper tape around bin stores and planters. He explains: "Copper tape works because when a slug comes into contact with the copper, it reacts with the slime on its body and creates a sensation that they don't like." The tape should form a complete barrier without gaps, and the area must be clear of weeds or foliage that could act as a bridge.
Mosh Latifi, Co-Owner of EcoCare Pest Management, agrees: "Copper tape is the most reliable and long-lasting natural slug deterrent. It stays in place all season without needing replacement." He notes that unlike coffee grounds or eggshells, copper tape does not wash away.
Crushed Eggshells: Simple and Effective
Martin Chaplin, Head of Horticulture at Hedges Direct, recommends crushed eggshells: "The rough, sharp texture creates a barrier that slugs are often reluctant to cross." He advises drying eggshells completely before crushing and scattering them around plants, replenishing after heavy rain.
Sheep Wool: A Unique Solution
James Copley, CEO of Copley Pest Solutions, suggests sheep wool: "Slugs rely on smooth, moist surfaces to move, and sheep wool disrupts their movement." He recommends using wool pellets or raw wool placed in a thick ring around plants, refreshing as needed.
Coffee Grounds: Aromatic Deterrent
Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, says: "Sprinkling coffee grounds around your plant deters slugs as they don't like the strong aroma and texture." Coffee grounds also enrich soil as they decompose.
These natural methods offer effective slug control without harming wildlife or plants, keeping gardens healthy throughout summer.
