Oil stains can be notoriously difficult to remove from clothing, but a simple natural remedy using baking soda and baking paper may be the solution. Cleaning expert Chantel Mila, known as Mama Mila on TikTok, shares her effective method for tackling these stubborn marks.
Why Oil Stains Are Tricky
Oil-based stains repel water and cling to fabric fibers, making them hard to wash out. As oil oxidizes, it becomes sticky and sets into the fabric, spreading and becoming even more difficult to lift. Traditional washing machine cycles often fail because oil repels water, so a different approach is needed.
The Baking Soda Method
To remove an oil stain, you will need baking soda and a sheet of baking paper. Start by placing a small piece of baking paper behind the stain, under the fabric. Then, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the stain, covering it completely. Baking soda is highly absorbent and will draw out the oil from the fabric.
Allow the baking soda to sit for a while. If it begins to clump, that is a good sign—it means the baking soda is absorbing the oil. Baking soda also acts as a deodorizer, helping to eliminate any odors.
Next, take another sheet of baking paper, fold it in half, and place it over the stain. Use an iron on a low setting to gently heat the baking paper, which will help lift the oil further. Be careful not to overheat. After ironing, remove the paper and brush away the baking soda. The stain should be gone.
Additional Tips
Before applying baking soda, blot the stain with a dry paper towel to remove excess oil. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain. Experts at Bosch recommend keeping the fabric dry and not rinsing the stain, as water can cause the oil to cling more tightly to the fibers.
Tide experts advise acting quickly on oil stains. If there is excess oil, dab it with kitchen roll before treating. However, be cautious when using this method on dark or colored clothes, as baking soda may cause fading or discoloration.
This natural hack offers a simple and effective way to remove oil stains without harsh chemicals, using items you likely already have in your kitchen.
