Will Schools Close? Amber Heat Warning for Merseyside This Week
Amber Heat Warning: Schools Relax Uniform Rules in Merseyside

An amber extreme heat warning has been expanded to cover Merseyside from Wednesday June 24 at 12am until Thursday June 25 at 11.59pm, as the Met Office forecasts exceptionally hot and humid weather. Schools across the region have begun issuing guidance to pupils, including relaxed uniform policies, but the Department for Education has stated that closures are not normally advised.

Schools Adjust Uniform Policies

King's Leadership Academy Hawthornes in Bootle announced on social media that blazers and jumpers are not required during school or social times this week. The school stated: 'Students are not permitted to wear PE kit or trainers and students are able to bring their own water in as always.'

Litherland High School also posted: 'This week is set to be a hot one. Students may leave blazers at home for this week. All other uniform expectations remain in place. Please consider using sun cream and ensure you have plenty of water.'

Weather Forecast and Safety Measures

The BBC Weather forecast for Liverpool indicates a sunny start on Tuesday with potential showers, followed by sunshine from mid-afternoon. Temperatures are expected to remain hot or very hot through Wednesday and Thursday, with extensive sunshine and dry conditions.

The Department for Education said: 'During hot weather, we don't normally advise schools to close. This is because school attendance is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential, and hot weather can usually be managed safely.'

Official guidance encourages schools to consider relaxing uniform rules, allow loose, light-coloured clothing, and encourage children to stay in the shade. The Department of Health and Social Care recommends avoiding vigorous physical activity on very hot days, with lessons adapted for sedentary activities.
