Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has issued a stark warning about the escalating threat to children from online predators, as the full horror of modern abuse tactics is revealed. Paedophile gangs are now using artificial intelligence to transform innocent photos of children from social media into explicit abuse videos. These criminals are also trading tips in large online groups to generate increasingly graphic and violent content.
Horrific Tactics and Live Streaming
In some of the most disturbing cases, gangs have forced children to carve group names into their own skin, leaving wounds that officers describe as “hard to imagine how it’s possible to survive.” Abuse is also being broadcast live to tens of thousands of viewers simultaneously. Perverts trick children into swapping intimate images, then blackmail and control them, selling the material to other criminal networks.
Government Response and Political Debate
On Monday morning, Sir Keir Starmer vowed to make Britain the first country in the world where children cannot take or share nude videos. He called on tech companies to introduce device controls that prevent children from sending or receiving sexually explicit images. If firms fail to act, the government will legislate, potentially imposing fines and criminal liability on tech bosses.
However, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch argued the plan lacks a proper strategy. She advocated banning children under 16 from social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, X, and Snapchat, stating: “A much simpler way is getting children off social media rather than piecemeal measures.”
Organised Gangs and International Reach
So-called “Com” groups of offenders use Satanic artwork and threaten real-world consequences if children refuse their demands. Schoolchildren have been encouraged to commit suicide or brand themselves with the group’s username. Offenders have distinct roles, with some recruiting schoolgirls and others marketing the abuse globally. These gangs often have members in Indonesia, America, Australia, and Europe.
Tech Giants Under Pressure
Investigators believe Silicon Valley tech giants are failing to protect children. The government wants Apple and Google to activate built-in features or develop new solutions to detect and block such content. All adults would need to verify their age to take or view nude images. Around 91% of online child sex abuse is now self-generated by children groomed by predators, according to the Home Office.
Starmer's Statement and Controversy
Sir Keir said: “For too long, people have been told it’s the price of modern tech. I reject that completely. Tech should adapt to society, not the other way around.” He added that if companies do not act, the law will change. Critics accused Labour of wanting “spyware” on every phone, but Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood dismissed this, saying: “This technology is already on devices. There is no reporting, no data collection, no monitoring, and no images leaving the device. All adults can switch off protections if over 18.”
