Tesco has shared advice on how to keep bread fresher for longer, recommending the freezer as the best storage spot. Proper storage prevents staleness and mould, maintains texture and taste, and reduces food waste.
Why Freeze Bread?
Fresh bread can go stale in two to three days, while store-bought bread lasts up to a week. Freezing extends its life significantly. Tesco's Real Food website states: 'When bread is stored correctly, it'll last much longer.' It adds: 'You can save spare slices for later by popping them in the freezer.'
How to Freeze Bread
Tesco says all types of bread can be frozen, whether sliced or whole. For store-bought loaves, simply place them in the freezer in their original plastic wrap. This prevents drying out and absorbing odours. For fresh bakery or homemade bread, allow it to cool completely, then wrap tightly in plastic wrap or an airtight freezer bag. For longer storage, add a layer of foil over the plastic to retain freshness and prevent freezer burn.
Storage Duration
Bread wrapped in a single layer can stay in the freezer for up to one month. Double-wrapped bread can last up to six months.
How to Defrost Bread
To defrost, remove bread from the freezer, take off any plastic wrap to avoid condensation, and leave it to thaw on the kitchen counter. Tesco warns against refreezing bread once defrosted, as this spoils the texture.
Uses for Stale Bread
Stale bread can be used for croutons, bread and butter pudding, or Tuscan soups. Its dryness helps it absorb liquids without turning mushy, making it versatile for sweet and savoury dishes.
