A UK-registered pharmacist has warned people against eating one food before bed, as it could have the opposite effect and keep you awake at night.
Why Bananas Might Disrupt Sleep
Despite many people believing the fruit aids sleep due to its magnesium and potassium content, it actually has the reverse effect, according to pharmacist Amir Singh. He said: "It's like really high in sugar actually, so it's probably going to keep you up."
In a TikTok video, Dr Singh rated various sleep techniques and left viewers stunned by his warning about bananas. He also cautioned against drinking milk before bed, especially for those who are lactose intolerant. "Five, if you're lactose intolerant, it's an awful idea. We all had it like as kids before bed, so you might feel a bit nostalgic and it gets you to sleep," he said.
What the Pharmacist Recommends Instead
For those seeking help falling asleep, Dr Singh suggests two alternatives. He rated antihistamines marketed specifically for sleep as a ten, noting they help but should not be used regularly. "It's fine as a one-off if you're struggling, you shouldn't be doing it regularly," he added.
He also gave a ten out of ten to eye masks, stating: "It's definitely going to help at least a little bit. It's not going to cause any harm and it'll get you into that complete darkness that you need to sleep."
Dr Singh's advice comes as many people search for natural sleep remedies. While bananas and milk are often recommended, his professional opinion suggests they may not be the best choices for a good night's rest.
