Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made significant progress in their pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and are edging closer to agreeing personal terms with the Portuguese star. The 21-year-old impressed during his debut season at the London Stadium, attracting interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid.
Spurs Close In on Fernandes
Manchester United had been considered the frontrunners for Fernandes, with West Ham holding firm on an £80 million asking price. However, Tottenham have thrust themselves into contention this week, with talks moving in a promising direction. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Spurs are now 'very close' to reaching an agreement with Fernandes, who is said to be open to the switch.
It is claimed, however, that formal negotiations with West Ham have yet to commence. As such, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will meet the player's £80 million valuation. They may attempt to negotiate a lower fee, given that West Ham were relegated and are not in a strong bargaining position.
Rebuild Under De Zerbi
Landing Fernandes would represent another considerable triumph for Tottenham as the club pushes ahead with a wholesale rebuild under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian has already been backed in the transfer market with the signings of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Manchester United's Disappointment
Manchester United had identified Fernandes as a leading transfer target, with Michael Carrick eager to sign at least two central midfielders. They have long been considered frontrunners for his signature and have reportedly been pushing to complete the deal in recent weeks. However, with Tottenham now in a promising position, United could be powerless to stop the deal from slipping through their fingers.
