Princess Beatrice's Unlikely London Marathon World Record That Set Royal First

Princess Beatrice holds a unique place in royal history as the only member of the Royal Family to have completed the London Marathon. In 2010, she ran the 26.2-mile course in aid of her mother Sarah Ferguson's charity, Children in Crisis, and set a world record in the process.

Beatrice was part of a 34-strong group that ran the marathon tied together as a human caterpillar, breaking the record for the greatest number of people to complete a marathon while bound together. She wore a fluorescent tutu and matching sweatbands and was photographed beaming with her medal after crossing the finish line.

While other royals have supported the event, none have taken on the full challenge. The Prince and Princess of Wales cheered on runners from a water station in 2017, promoting the Heads Together mental health charity. They handed out water and posed for selfies, but some cheeky runners squirted them with bottles, leaving the couple looking less than impressed.

Kate has admitted she would love to run the marathon but cited security concerns as a barrier. Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, ran a 1.5-mile portion of the socially distanced 2020 marathon alongside a runner raising funds for Mencap, of which she is patron.
