Olyslagers Leaps To High Jump Gold In Tokyo Triumph

Nicola Olyslagers overcame two rain delays to win Australia's first gold medal of the world championships in Tokyo, clearing 2m to beat Poland's Maria Zodzik on a countback. The victory cements her place at the summit of high jump after also winning the world indoor and Diamond League titles in 2025.

The men's discus competition was also affected by incessant rain, which left the throwing circle slippery and forced a stoppage. The event restarted after the final track race, with officials using towels to keep the circle and equipment dry. Sweden's Daniel Ståhl eventually won gold with a throw of 70.47m, pushing Australia's Matt Denny off the podium. Denny described the conditions as the worst he has ever competed in and was visibly emotional afterwards.

Olyslagers, who entered as favourite, cleared 2m without a miss despite the wet mat. Only Zodzik matched her, but neither could clear 2.02m. Olyslagers credited her preparation and Christian faith for helping her stay calm during the delays. 'Even if I was waiting and out there in the rain, I have such a joy because I know these moments are forever,' she said.

Earlier, Jess Hull finished eighth in the 800m final, clocking a time close to her national record. Ky Robinson placed fourth in the 5,000m, Australia's best result in the event since Craig Mottram's bronze in 2005. The men's 4x100m relay team failed to finish after a botched changeover, adding to relay woes after earlier disqualifications and a dropped baton.

Australia ended the championships 15th on the medal tally with one gold and three bronze. The United States topped the table with 16 gold medals among 26 total.
