Fifa's $5bn Growth Under Infantino Sparks Peace Prize Defence
Fifa defends $5bn growth and peace prize under Infantino

Fifa's director of media has issued a robust defence of the organisation's financial performance and its decision to introduce a peace prize, following critical editorial commentary.

Financial Success Under Infantino's Leadership

Bryan Swanson, Fifa's Director of Media based in Zurich, has highlighted the organisation's remarkable financial achievements since Gianni Infantino became president in 2016. Under his leadership, Fifa has generated more than $5 billion to support global football growth through the Fifa Forward programme.

Swanson emphasised that Fifa operates as a not-for-profit organisation, with all revenue reinvested into football development. This commercial success from the Fifa World Cup benefits all 211 member associations worldwide.

Global Development Initiatives

The financial growth has enabled substantial investment in football development across diverse regions. Swanson pointed to specific examples including the establishment of the Afghan Women United's team and support for football growth in Cape Verde, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.

These initiatives form part of Fifa's 11 strategic objectives, which are publicly available on their website. The organisation's membership has demonstrated confidence in this approach, with Infantino being re-elected unopposed in 2023.

Defending the Peace Prize Initiative

Swanson's response addresses criticism of Fifa's decision to recognise those advocating for world peace. He argues that rather than facing criticism for endorsing peace in a divided world, Fifa should be acknowledged as a global governing body working to create a brighter future.

The defence comes after a Guardian editorial on 12th November suggested Infantino should focus on his "day job" rather than peace initiatives. Swanson references a previous letter published by the Guardian on 24th September that he claims was ignored in the newspaper's latest critique.

Swanson concludes that Fifa's track record of financial success and global development work demonstrates effective management of its core responsibilities while simultaneously promoting positive global values.
