Fresh Theory Emerges Over Ben White's England Camp Controversy
Ben White has made a notable return to the England national football squad for the first time since the 2022 World Cup, where he departed citing personal reasons. The Arsenal defender was called up this month as an injury replacement for Jarell Quansah under new manager Thomas Tuchel, marking his comeback after a prolonged absence from international duty.
Speculation Surrounds White's Previous Dispute
Despite his return, speculation continues to swirl regarding the underlying cause of White's earlier dispute during Gareth Southgate's tenure as England manager. Persistent rumours have suggested a row with coaching staff, but a new explanation has now surfaced, offering a different perspective on the events that led to his exit from the camp.
According to broadcaster Adrian Durham on talkSPORT, the issue stemmed from a requirement for players to watch videos of opponents on their devices. "The players were told to watch videos of opponents and they were given videos on their laptops, iPads, whatever it was," Durham stated. He claimed that White chose not to comply, and England analysts, using technology, could track who had and had not viewed the materials.
Durham elaborated, "When asked about it, Ben White got really upset about it to the point where he quit England." This revelation raises questions about White's commitment, with Durham questioning why Tuchel would recall him if he was unwilling to put in the necessary preparation. "If that is true, why on earth would Thomas Tuchel want him back in the squad when he's not prepared to put the hard yards in," he added, while also offering an apology if the account proves inaccurate.
Mixed Reception Upon Return
White's return to the England side was met with a mixed reception from fans. During a recent match against Uruguay, he was jeered by sections of the crowd after coming on as a substitute, ending his international exile. The 28-year-old nearly scored a late winner but conceded a penalty, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
Tuchel expressed disappointment at the negative reaction from supporters, stating, "He has our support and I think he feels our support and the support from the group." Despite the jeers, White remains in contention for future matches, with Tuchel indicating he could start in the upcoming game against Japan due to squad rotation needs.
Looking Ahead
As England prepares for their next fixture, Tuchel has confirmed that White is part of his plans, praising his performance in training and integration within the team. "He was good, again good in training and good in the group," the manager noted. This development adds a layer of intrigue to White's international career, as both fans and pundits watch to see how he navigates this chapter under new leadership.
