Ravens Star Hit With Hefty NFL Fine for On-Field Celebration
Baltimore Ravens defensive star Dre'Mont Jones has found himself significantly lighter in the pocket after the NFL issued him a substantial fine for his on-field actions during last weekend's victory. The 28-year-old was penalised $14,069 for making what the league deemed a 'violent gesture' in the game against the New York Jets.
The Incident That Cost Thousands
During the Ravens' 23-10 win over the Jets on Sunday, Jones celebrated a crucial late-game sack by putting his hand to his throat and making a slashing motion. The player later explained he was simply signalling that the game was 'over' in a competitive sense. However, NFL chiefs took a dim view of the celebration, and almost a week later, the formal notification of the fine arrived.
Jones, who has two children with his partner Kayla Kren, took to social media platform X on Saturday to react with his signature humour. He quoted a post reporting the fine and wrote: 'I was just saying “it’s over” like in a competitive sense and now my kids aren’t gonna have Christmas gifts this year #ThankYouNFL'.
Fan Backlash and Support for the Player
Despite the light-hearted tone from Jones, a wave of support and indignation quickly followed from fans who believed the punishment was unjust. One supporter, even identifying as a rival Steelers fan, commented: 'Appeal it bro. No way they should’ve fined you for that... I think that was bulls***.'
Another fan echoed the sentiment, stating: 'What a ridiculous fine. You didn't deserve that! What happened to football??' The consensus among the online community was that the fine was excessive for a celebratory act, with many urging Jones to appeal the decision immediately.
Since joining the Ravens from the Tennessee Titans in November, Jones has made four appearances, registering five tackles and 1.5 sacks. Prior to his brief stint with the Titans, where he signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract, he spent four seasons with the Denver Broncos and two with the Seattle Seahawks. Over his nine-season career, the former Ohio State standout has recorded 241 tackles and 36.5 sacks in 103 NFL games.
