Ronnie O'Sullivan Withdraws from 2025 Masters on Medical Grounds

Ronnie O'Sullivan has withdrawn from the Johnstone's Paint Masters just two days before the tournament begins, citing medical reasons. The seven-time world champion was scheduled to face Australia's Neil Robertson in the first round on Wednesday, January 14, at Alexandra Palace.

World Snooker confirmed that Chris Wakelin, the 17th seed at the cut-off point, will replace O'Sullivan in the draw. The tournament runs from January 11 to 18. O'Sullivan, who turned 50 last month, had previously pulled out of the 2024 edition for the same reason, despite being the defending champion after his record-extending eighth Masters win in 2024.

O'Sullivan has been inconsistent about his participation this season. In September, he told TalkSport, 'I probably won't play the Masters this year.' However, in November, he told The Sun he would play 'if I can,' noting that his move to Dubai last summer meant he had to prioritise certain tournaments.

His last competitive outing was at the UK Championship in December, where he was eliminated in the first round by Zhou Yuelong. O'Sullivan has missed several events this season, including the Wuhan Open and the British Open, citing medical reasons or the need to focus on his mental health. The exact nature of his medical condition has not been disclosed.
