Nearly four in 10 football fans admit they spend more money when their team scores a goal, according to a new study. A poll of 2,000 supporters found that 37% part with their cash more easily after a goal, with celebratory drinks being the most popular purchase, averaging £17.70 per goal.
The research, commissioned by Post Office Travel Money, revealed that fans also spend an extra £15.91 on food and £22.06 on merchandise when their team is winning. More than one in 10 have bought tickets for future games after a goal. In total, a single goal could cost up to £188 per person.
Factors influencing spending include whether the goal puts the team ahead, the match's significance, and the opponent. Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at Post Office, said: 'Fans have no idea what emotions they'll experience, so it's hard for them to pre-plan spending.'
The study also found that 65% of those who watch football abroad find it more memorable, and 30% spend more when watching in another country. Reasons include being in holiday mode and getting swept up in the atmosphere. However, 36% have woken up the next day to realise they overspent.
Plunkett added: 'With fans admitting being abroad makes them more likely to spend, we encourage those heading overseas to plan how they'll manage their money before they travel.' She suggested using a travel money card to track spending and pay securely while abroad.
