Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has urged his old club to sign Crysencio Summerville, who has impressed at the 2026 World Cup with two goals in two games for the Netherlands. The 24-year-old winger, currently at West Ham, is reportedly a target for United, who have already made an enquiry.
Summerville's World Cup Form
Summerville scored in the Netherlands' opening match and added another in Saturday's 5-1 thrashing of Sweden. His performances have boosted his stock, with West Ham expected to demand around £50 million for the Dutch international. Summerville joined West Ham from Leeds in 2024 and is under contract until 2031.
Butt's Verdict
Speaking to Paddy Power, Butt said: "He's an explosive player, he's good to watch, but I don't think he's consistent enough. However, the money shouldn't be a lot to get him, and United have to build a squad." Butt emphasized the need for squad depth, adding: "It can't be all about going and getting the superstar signings. Summerville was brilliant for the Netherlands in the first game, so he could potentially start every week for Man United. I'm looking at him thinking he's got to get a lot more consistent to get to the next level. But I'd still definitely look at signing a player like him."
Squad Building Priority
Butt highlighted United's lack of depth, recalling a defeat to Leeds at Old Trafford last season: "When you play a team and see their starting 11 but then they've got another four that can come on and make a difference, that's massive. When United played Leeds... the players on the bench and around the squad weren't good enough." He urged the club to pursue players like Summerville to strengthen the bench.
Other Targets
United are also interested in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, though Arsenal and Tottenham are monitoring the Portuguese star as well.
