Antonio Valencia Apologises to Ecuador for Poor World Cup

Former Manchester United star Antonio Valencia has publicly apologised to the people of Ecuador following the national team's disappointing performances at the 2026 World Cup. The South American side are on the brink of elimination after a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a shocking 0-0 draw with minnows Curacao.

Valencia Calls for Unity Amid Fan Frustration

In a message posted on X, Valencia urged Ecuadorians to remain united and not direct harsh criticism at the players. He said: "I want to apologise to all the people of Ecuador, to everyone who travelled from so far away, to everyone who supported the team from the beginning. We know the frustration you feel, but we must remain united as a country. Please don't be so harsh with your messages and comments toward the players. They are the ones who most want to bring joy to the country. Let's support this new generation. There are many changes to be made and a long road ahead."

Ecuador's World Cup Struggles

Ecuador opened their campaign with a narrow loss to Ivory Coast, courtesy of a late winner by Manchester United forward Amad Diallo. They then faced Curacao, a Caribbean nation that had been thrashed 7-1 by Germany in their first match. Despite dominating possession and creating chances, Ecuador could only manage a 0-0 stalemate, leaving them with just one point from two games. To have any chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams, Ecuador must now beat Germany in their final group match.

Valencia's Legacy at Manchester United and Beyond

Valencia made 339 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 25 goals and providing 48 assists. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Wigan Athletic as a dynamic winger, he later transitioned into a top-class right-back. In 2018, Jose Mourinho appointed him club captain, and he left in 2019 to join LDU Quito in his homeland. For Ecuador, he earned 99 caps and scored 11 goals. Currently, he serves as assistant manager of Ecuadorian side Academia AV.

What Next for Ecuador?

Ecuador are not mathematically eliminated. A victory over Germany would put them on four points, giving them a chance to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. However, they will need other results to go their way. Valencia, now a coach, will be watching closely as his country fights to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
