Liverpool's summer signing Hugo Ekitike has openly discussed his move to Anfield, revealing his genuine enthusiasm for joining the Reds and his evolving relationship with manager Arne Slot.
Instant Impact at Anfield
The French international striker, who completed a £79 million transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt in July, has already made a significant impression at his new club. Despite competing for places with record signing Alexander Isak, Ekitike has found the net six times during his initial period at Liverpool.
This immediate impact contrasts with Isak's own start to life on Merseyside. The Swedish striker, who joined from Newcastle United for a British record £125 million, has seen his campaign disrupted by injury problems and has managed just one goal so far.
Why Liverpool Was the Right Choice
Ekitike, who was also a target for rivals Manchester United, explained that he knew immediately that Liverpool was the perfect destination for his career development.
"When they came to me, I was sure," the 23-year-old told Sky Sports. "I talked with my family and my brothers to see what was the best for me."
He elaborated on what made Liverpool stand out, stating: "In terms of identity, etiquette, it's just like a club for me to keep progressing and improving myself. Like a serious club with big values, great supporters, top stadium - so I think it is the right place for me. I'm definitely sure this is the right place for me."
Working Under Arne Slot's Guidance
The young forward also provided insight into his relationship with Liverpool manager Arne Slot, describing how the Dutch coach is constantly pushing him to improve.
"As a player, sometimes you're p*****. It's annoying but I know he wants the best for me and he wants the best for the team," Ekitike admitted.
He added: "I would say he's on my back, but not for a bad reason. He just wants to help me, so I don't take that badly. He wants me to give more and more."
Ekitike recognises this intense coaching style as a positive sign, explaining: "Sometimes you say that when a coach is on your back that maybe you feel like it's a little bit too much and you want to complain. But it's a good thing because, if a coach doesn't like you, he will not speak to you or not try to get the best of you. I take that in a good way."
With eight Premier League starts already under his belt and a growing understanding with his manager, Ekitike appears well-placed to continue his development at Anfield, even as competition for places intensifies with Isak's eventual return to full fitness.
